ACBVI Adventures
The ACBVI Adventures program is designed to empower individuals with vision loss by providing opportunities for outdoor recreation and personal growth. This program encourages participants to step outside their comfort zones and experience new challenges in a supportive environment. Activities include hiking, tandem biking, kayaking, and other group adventures that promote physical fitness, confidence, and social connections. By engaging in these outdoor experiences, participants can build their skills, foster independence, and develop a stronger sense of self.
In addition to recreation, ACBVI Adventures emphasizes the importance of community and teamwork. Participants often work together, supporting one another in overcoming obstacles and achieving shared goals. The program is open to individuals of all skill levels, ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, can participate and benefit. With guidance from experienced instructors and volunteers, ACBVI Adventures creates a fun, inclusive space for participants to explore their potential and enjoy the great outdoors.
Assistive Technology
Computers and smartphones have changed how we live, work, and play. If you have vision loss, you can improve your access to these devices with apps, specialized software, and equipment. Many devices already have features for visual and hearing impairments. Our experts can help you reach your goals by assessing your skills and introducing you to assistive technologies like Braille displays, screen readers (NVDA, JAWS), screen magnification, speech recognition, and more. You can also explore tools to help with education, career, or staying connected. For those with both hearing and vision loss, we offer personalized programs with videophones, captioned phones, and listening devices. Contact us for more information on our services and programs.
Social Recreation
Life is about more than just work and school. However, vision loss can sometimes make it feel more challenging to enjoy hobbies, stay active, make friends, or simply have fun. That’s why we offer a variety of activities tailored to your interests and lifestyle. Whether you’re looking to try something new or rediscover an old passion, we have something for everyone. Our activities include bingo, trivia, book club, gym workouts, chair exercises, woodturning, ceramics, creative writing, Spanish language, current events discussions, music appreciation, and social events. These activities are optional but provide a relaxed setting where you can practice the skills and tools you’re learning in your rehabilitation classes. Ready to add some fun to your routine?
Support Groups
Vision loss can bring many emotions, from disbelief and anger to anxiety and depression. You’re not alone in this. Our support groups offer caring, expert help for individuals with vision loss or combined vision and hearing loss. Whether you need individual support, family help, or group sessions, we have options for you. We also provide education about your rights under the ADA and connect you with helpful community resources. Our goal is to help you adapt and thrive at home, at work, and in your community.
Orientation and Mobility
Having a visual impairment doesn’t mean you have to stay at home. With orientation and mobility training, you can learn the skills needed to safely and confidently navigate your surroundings. You’ll receive personalized coaching to use your other senses, practice in various environments, and learn techniques for crossing streets and using public transportation. We’ll also help you choose the right assistive devices, such as canes, GPS tools, or telescopic aids. If you’re interested in using a guide dog, we offer guidance for that too. With the right support, you can achieve greater independence.
Living Skills
Everyone has their own idea of a fulfilling life, but most of us want some control over our personal and home life. Living Skills, or adaptive rehabilitation, can help you achieve that. Our experts will teach you essential skills like personal grooming, cooking, and organizing your home for easy access. You’ll also learn communication tools like Braille, audio products, typing, writing devices, ASL, and assistive technology. With our guidance, you can gain more independence and confidently manage your daily life with vision loss.
Employment
Everyone has their own career goals, but most of us seek stability and independence at work. Our Employment Services program is here to help you achieve those goals. We offer support in resume writing, interview prep, workplace communication, and adaptive technology. You’ll also learn about job accommodations and finding opportunities that fit your skills and interests. Contact us to learn more and confidently pursue your career goals.
